eBay Giving Works

Donations though eBay Giving Works are processed by MissionFish, which keeps a small deduction from each donation to offset some of the costs of processing millions of transactions a year, including the staff, legal and financial infrastructure that makes it possible. As an IRS registered nonprofit organization (Federal Tax ID: 45-0931286), MissionFish has no shareholders, and any surpluses they may generate in the future will be reinvested in fulfilling their charitable purposes. Because your donation is made to MissionFish and then distributed to your chosen nonprofit, 100% of your donation is tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

MissionFish never keeps more than 5% of a donation and does not charge:
  • Any set-up fee or annual subscription fee to nonprofits for participating in eBay Giving Works
  • Any fees to Nonprofit Direct Sellers for using eBay Giving Works
  • Any fees to eBay buyers or sellers

Specifics regarding MissionFish deductions are outlined below:

Nonprofit Direct Selling (Items sold by nonprofits on eBay)

There is no MissionFish deduction when a nonprofit sells an item on eBay Giving Works. eBay also waives its basic Insertion and Final Value fees for nonprofits when an item sells, making it extremely cost-effective for nonprofits to sell items through eBay Giving Works.

Community Selling (Donations from eBay sellers)

When eBay sellers donate the proceeds of a sale, the MissionFish deduction is 5%. MissionFish does not charge any additional processing costs to buyers, sellers or nonprofits. The seller receives a fee credit on their eBay fees from the sale of the item proportional to the amount donated.

Example: Donation made by an eBay Community Seller (20% of sale price)

In this example*, the Community Seller:

  • Sold an item for $10.00
  • Donated 20% of the sale price
  • Received a credit on their basic selling fees from eBay proportional to the amount donated (20%)
  • Receives a tax receipt for the $2.00 donation

* Example assumes the seller is a "Basic Subscriber" and has listed a CSA item in the fixed-price format.

eBay seller donation (20%)
Final sale price $10.00
Donation percent 20%
Tax-deductable donation amt. $2.00
MissionFish deduction -$0.10
Nonprofit receives: $1.90
eBay seller fees
Insertion and Final Value Fees $1.20
Seller fee credits (20%) -$0.24
Total $0.96

eBay Give at Checkout donations

The MissionFish deduction for gifts made through eBay Give at Checkout is 5%.

Cash donations via eBay Donate Now and other channels

There is a deduction of 3.75% of the amount given for gifts made through eBay Donate Now. This is one of the lowest processing rates for nonprofits that accept gifts online.

If the donor chooses to give an extra 3.75% (tax-deductible), MissionFish will pass along 100% of the original donation amount.
