Meet Betty Refour — Creating Art With Meaning

Betty Refour uses eBay Giving Works to support causes that have personally touched her. She lost her grandmother to breast cancer and her mother to myeloma. Currently, she cares for her autistic sister while running an eBay business (Art by Betty Refour) and website. By using the program to support nonprofits that are emotionally significant to her, Betty is giving back while standing out in the marketplace.

Reasons for Giving

Betty, a primarily self-taught artist, has incorporated eBay Giving Works into her business as a way to help organizations who are working on areas that have personally touched her life. Betty first heard about eBay Giving Works in an email from eBay. Having supported charity for years, she realized it could be an additional avenue for giving back to causes she's passionate about.

In 2005, she decided to give it a try.

"Having lost my grandmother to Breast Cancer, at first I listed boxed cards through eBay Giving Works with a portion going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. After my mother died from Myeloma, I began listing for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society," she says. Betty's sister Rose also designs note cards, which have a portion of the Final Sale Price donated to The Autism Society of America.

When asked how she feels about supporting charities, Betty says, "It's very important. These are issues that affect me and my life. They continue to affect me."

Positive Customer Response

Betty primarily uses eBay Giving Works for store items and has found that items listed through the program sell more frequently than those that are not. Typically, 80% to 90% of her items are listed with eBay Giving Works.

Customers aren't shy about sharing their appreciation for her generosity. They often thank Betty for raising awareness of health issues and she has received especially positive feedback from those touched by autism. "Through eBay Giving Works, I've met a lot of people that have autistic children. They are thrilled to death that someone is listing items and donating the proceeds." Similar responses have also been received from buyers who have been impacted by breast cancer.

For Betty's business and personal commitment to giving back, eBay Giving Works just make sense. "eBay Giving Works allows you to easily market your products as well as support a cause you are connected to."
