UNICEF Tap Project

$1 at eBay checkout from you = 40 days of safe water for a child

Every year, 1.5 million children under the age of five die because they lack clean drinking water and adequate sanitation. UNICEF is working toward the day when no child dies from such utterly preventable causes. And thousands of eBay members are helping UNICEF reach that goal—a dollar at a time.

It all happens through eBay's Give At Checkout program. UNICEF has been featured in Give At Checkout several times since Give At Checkout started in 2008. "It's so easy when you're checking out on eBay just to 'drop a buck' for us," says Esther Choi, Assistant Director of Interactive Marketing for the United States Fund for UNICEF.

When UNICEF decided to start the UNICEF Tap Project, they immediately looked to Give At Checkout for placement during World Water Week, the last full week of March. And the eBay Community came through—with $25,000 raised for the Tap Project in 2010.

Where your money goes
UNICEF says that every dollar raised through the UNICEF Tap Project can bring 40 days of clean water to countless children in more than 100 countries around the globe.

  • In Haiti, UNICEF Tap Project support helped UNICEF and its partners get safe water to 1.2 million people each day after January's devastating earthquake—protecting survivors from deadly waterborne illnesses.
  • In Belize, thanks to UNICEF Tap Project donations, a seven-year-old boy named Juan now has the chance to drink water that won't leave him weak from parasites.
  • In Iraq, where years of instability weakened an already dismal water system, UNICEF Tap Project funds have helped to provide more than 80,000 children and women with water that won't make them sick.
  • In Cote D'Ivoire, new UNICEF Tap Project-funded water pumps mean that Suzanne and Claudia no longer have to walk three miles each morning to get to the nearest well—a chore that used to mean they often missed school.
All funds raised through the Tap Project support UNICEF's water, sanitation and hygiene programs, and its work to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world. The $25,000 that came from eBay shoppers who added $1-$25 to their purchase price at checkout could mean up to 1,000,000 days of clean drinking water for children in more than 100 countries!

"Give At Checkout is an innovative, simple way for people to make a difference for the world's most vulnerable children," says Choi. "And by choosing us as their favorite nonprofit, our supporters can be regularly reminded of an easy way to be charitable whenever they're shopping on eBay."

"eBay and Give At Checkout prove that you can give online safely and creatively. It shows that UNICEF is a lot more than Halloween, holiday cards, and mailing in a check," says Choi.
